What to Look for in a Personal Trainer
Are you wondering whether to hire a personal trainer?
Congratulations if you are! It’s a GREAT way to get into shape.
After the disruptive year we’ve all had, this might be the perfect time to engage someone with the expertise and the caring to help you reach your goals.
Deciding to get in shape is the first step, picking the right trainer is the second one.
Here are a few things to look for:
The trainer should ask you these kinds of questions:
What are your goals? What’s your exercise history? Do you have any injuries, physical limitations or medical conditions? Have you ever had a joint replacement? Have you discussed fitness with your physician?
You might want to ask if he or she is certified by one of the main training organizations, like the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) or the American Council on Exercise (ACE).
Also, does he or she have other experience or certifications in working with people over 50, like through the Functional Aging Institute? Or does the trainer have expertise working with people who have had health issues like yours?
And – this is really important – do you like this person? Can you see yourself enjoying time with him or her, or interacting via computer for virtual training?
Here is a little about how I work…
I am an NASM certified personal trainer and have been in the business since the 1990’s when I used to train Upper East Side New Yorkers in their homes. I am also a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique (since 1992), a level 4 MELT instructor, a Functional Aging Specialist through the Functional Aging Institute, a Barefoot Strong Instructor through EBFA, a tai chi instructor, and group fitness trainer.
As I said, I’ve been in this business a long time and I love what I do!
My goal is to help people 50+ to improve their posture, balance, strength, and stability, so that they can reduce pain and continue to do all the activities they love to do, for longer.
I believe that movement is medicine and motion is lotion. In order to stay healthy and vibrant, we need to keep moving…always! It helps on so many levels of mind, body and spirit. It lubricates joints, raises endorphins, gets rid of stagnation in the gut, keeps everything well oiled and resilient, is beneficial for the brain, and so much more!
Science has proven that strength, balance, and many other aspects of fitness and wellness can be improved no matter what our age or diagnosis. The human body is always seeking balance and repair. We just need to allow it to do so, and help it along by giving ourselves some preventative self-care (pre-hab), instead of waiting until there is a huge problem that needs to be re-habbed. I have many tools in my toolbox to help people find the winning combination that works for them. My goal is to help people to defy the negative effects and stereotypes of aging, and with the right self-care and attitude, I know this is possible.
So give me a call to see if we are a good fit. I‘d be happy to help you find the right training to meet your fitness and wellness goals. We can work out at your home, in person, or virtually on Zoom.
